Limiting Heights/Load Carrying Questions

  • If we have a mixed wall of UltraSTEEL™ and standard material, what limiting height table should I use?
    • Most specifications require single source responsibility. You should verify that this requirement is not in the specification before mixing products. If you choose to mix products you should follow the limiting heights published in ASTM-C754.
  • Are the limiting heights tables’ composite action?
    • Yes, the UltraSTEEL™ limiting heights charts were developed to exactly the same standards as SSMA and ASTM-C754 data. This means the limiting heights are based on the steel framing being sheathed with a single layer of gypsum, full height, on both sides of the wall.
  • Do I get better limiting heights if there are two layers of gypsum on each side?
    • Yes. If the wall has two layers of gypsum board on both sides, full height, you will increase the effective height of the wall.
  • What is the purpose of the load-displacement graph?
    • The load-displacement graph is a summary of bending tests conducted on samples of product with one set being UltraSTEEL™ and the other set traditional steel.  Both, from the same base steel.
  • Can I use these studs in a curtain wall or load-bearing application?
    • The products offered at this time are replacements for traditional interior non-load-bearing drywall framing products. Neither product should be used for exterior framing applications.
  • Is there a limit to what the studs can support since they have greater load-carrying capacity?
    • All studs have a limit to their capability based on spacing, height, and lateral load.
  • Since UltraSTEEL™ is stronger, are there times that an UltraSTEEL™ 25-gauge equivalent stud can be used in place of a traditional 20-gauge stud?
    • Although the UltraSTEEL™ product has been engineered to match the traditional products as close as possible, there are situations when a wall height greater than the limits of a traditional 25-gauge stud can be achieved with an UltraSTEEL™ 25-gauge equivalent stud.
